Step 3: Accept Yourself!

Here is step 3 for how to practice Radical Acceptance. What do you think?

Step 3: Accept yourself. Don't listen to the little voice in your head that says you aren't good enough. Accept the way you are, right now, without judgment.

  1. I generally don't have much trouble in this area of accepting myself. That is - until my son's addiction took me down the dark and slippery path of self-doubt, guilt, and "what if I..." conversations that don't have answers. While many have preached to me the 3Cs, I have struggled to free myself from self-accusation. It's like after 24 years of being a very confident mom, I started having a maternal identity crisis.

Thankfully, I have great support and I am learning to start turning my back to this destructive, obsessive temptation.

These are some things that have helped:
    - this online community of grieving parents (finding out that good homes and good parents don't always produce drug-free children)
    - my counselor who introduced the concept of Radical Acceptance
    - my husband who thinks I am the best mother in the world
    - my God who reminds me that most of our heroes of the faith have made serious mistakes, but they were not enough to stop Him from accomplishing His purposes
    - exercise, it's a stress-buster for me.
    - finding ways to laugh, with friends, with a movie (Toy Story 3 was very funny).
    - Al-Anon, I am meeting some truly wonderful people who understand my pain, share their insights, and extend a warm hand of support.

    Blessings to you all.

  2. Acceptance and forgiving myself is the thing I have to do before I can truly move on to accepting and making amends to others.
